10 Model horse photography prompts!

Dec 13, 2024

If you lack inspiration for your model horse photo shoot but you still want to give it a go, completing small challenges helps the brain find the right working mind set. Prompts like these help improve your photography skills and can even prepare you for a model horse photography contest as they train you to create a scene based on the information you are given. Here are 10 model horse photography prompts to get you started!

  1. PHOTOGRAPH A HERD. Taking pictures of multiple horses is a difficult task, you have to choose horses that look as realistic as possible and set up your scene in a natural way to help make your miniatures come to life.

  2. TAKE A PHOTO HIGH UP. When we photograph miniatures we tend to lower ourselves to the ground. A nice challenge would be to lift the model on a rock or a log and give the picture an elevated look. We could also take a picture from above and emphasize the fact the horses are very small.

  3. SHOOT INDOORS. For people who prefer nature photography, shooting indoors may be a real struggle. You need to set up a diorama to give the horses a tiny world to live in.

  4. PHOTOGRAPH HALF A HORSE. This may seem a bit strange but cutting off a part of the subject so they are not completely in the picture switches things up and helps you avoid the repetition of your compositions. Finding the right place to cut your subject also improves your skills.

Now, lets get into some more challenging prompts.

  5. CREATE THE FEELING OF A SWAMP. That's right, it's a fun way to get creative and try new things. A tip sure to make your pictures as swampy as possible is to play around with the white balance in your camera settings and give a yellow tint to your photographs.

  6. DETAIL SHOTS. Try to take a picture that showcases a certain feature in your model horse, for example, a raised leg, a lowered head, bent ears.

  7. INTERACTION. Create a scene in which the horse interacts with another animal or human.

  8. MAKE A STORY. Imagine a scene and take a photograph in the middle of the action. Example: a horse drinking, splashing in water, rolling, etc.

  9. TUCKED IN. Place your model horse between shrubs, in a crack or surrounded by twigs. This gives your photos a cozy feel.

  10. STUNNING BACKDROP. Take your model horse with you and find an astonishing landscape you can use as a backdrop for your photos, you can even take the picture at sunset to create the silhouette of the horse as the frontal plan.

I hope this gave you some inspiration and enticed you to try one of these challenges!

    Until next time!
