My Top 3 Riding Tips! Equestrians, horse riding
Some of you may already know that I have been riding for eight years now and although my riding journey has been difficult, going from yard to yard trying to find a trainer who cares about the horses more than preforming, I have learned a lot about being a confident rider. So I’m going to share three things every rider should do!
Soft - Being a soft rider or working towards that is one of the best things you can do to improve your riding. Horses respond better to soft, confident riders who don’t kick hard or throw themselves in the saddle, but use their aids appropriately and never harshly. I have seen countless harsh riders blaming their horses for not responding to aids, yet as soon as a calm, soft rider sits on them they start responding perfectly. Have a soft hand, leg, and seat, and you will start to notice your horse is more attentive.
Videos and Pictures - Having someone film you while you ride can make the world of a difference. When you watch back videos of your rides you can sit back and critique them. You will be able to identify the mistakes on your own and see your satisfying improvement over time!
Don’t be afraid to say NO - If you feel unsettled about anything in your lessons, either something your trainer is doing or something going on around you, you have every right to say you don’t want to do that or you don’t want that to happen. Because each lesson is about you and your horse not about somebody else.
These are things that really helped me in my riding journey and still do today, so I hope they will be useful to you too!
