What Skills to Learn when Becoming a Model Horse Artist!
February 14, 2025
Hi everyone! Today I want to tell you what 5 skills I think every model horse artist should know or learn. All these skills help ease our work and expand our range for creativity! So here's what 5 things you should know or learn if you are or will be a model horse artist.
Use basic painting techniques. Mixing and blending is going to occur no matter what you are using to customize your model horse. If that's acrylics or pastels, you're going to be mixing colors.
Most model horse artists don't only customize their horses. Some make tack and dioramas in which case working with wires and metal inevitably happens. It's helpful when you can make your own metal hardware instead of relying on store bought ones.
Product research. It's important to know what kind of sealant's you're working with, what kind of paints, pastels, clay, and their level of toxicity. I know I've already talked about safety in lot's of my post's but I'm not going to stop because it's really important.
Basic sculpting skills. If you're going to make any changes or drastic customs, you will need to use clay. Horses are really hard and frustrating to sculpt so I recommend starting with other basic things if it's your first time using clay.
How to handle the model. It's important to cover your horses while drying, touch them only with gloves in the pastel stage, and use precise movements when cutting off parts of your horse so you don't take too much plastic or resin off.
Thank you for reading, I wish you a happy craft day!
