5 Beginner Model Horse Photography Tips for Amazing Pictures + 2 prompts to get you started

Have you just picked up a camera for the first time, not sure how to place your model, or even which horse to pick for your first go? Today, I want to share 5 beginner model horse photography tips that will hopefully get you more comfortable when you’re out photographing your models and I have two fun photo prompts you can try to begin your journey as a model horse photographer!

  • Messing Up Means You’re Already Better! Do not fear to make a fool of yourself. As soon as you mess it up it means you’ve learned something new and improved. No one gets it on their first try! Photography is an art with creative freedom and room for new techniques!

  • Choosing Your First Model. Don’t let this get overwhelming! Choose a model that you like, is special to you, or looks presentable. As you begin to find your style you will start to notice what models you like taking pictures of, what characteristics to look for depending on different styles of pictures, and what pose and mold to choose. For now, it’s important that you find joy in looking at that model and feel free to experiment.

  • Get Down Low! Most beginners find it awkward to lie on the ground or sit down while taking pictures, but it’s the most effective way to get realistic shots of your horse.

  • Fancy Gear Doesn’t Matter Now. Having the right camera equipment is a step towards your professional journey however taking pictures of your model using a phone or a cheaper camera is perfectly fine! (As long as it functions and takes clear pictures, of course.)

  • Trying Never Fails! Have fun, try new things, and if you like it be consistent! The more pictures you take, the more experience you earn!

If you need some inspiration to get started you could try one of these prompts/challenges!

  1. Take a model with you out on walks! You never know when you might stumble upon the perfect photoshoot location!

  2. Invite a friend! Maybe your friend is also into horses, or just your best friend who you can drag along. Let them have a turn and you may have found something fun to do together!

As always, I hope this was useful to you in some way and thank you for reading till the end!
