5 Key Features of a Custom Model Horse!

June 29, 2025

Hello everyone! Today I wanted to tell you 5 features each model horse should have (In my opinion) for the best results! Let's get started!

  • The number one thing I think every model horse custom should have is shading. If you don't shade your models they will lack realism and movement.

  • Second would have to be the markings. Whenever you have a horse with markings, the edges should be somewhat irregular and the haring detail should always follow the natural hair growth pattern.

  • Number three is detailed hooves! They can honestly make or brake a custom. I have tried to simplify this step before when I was just starting to customize horses but it is totally worth it to put in the effort and make nice hooves.

  • Add details to the face. They will make the personality of your model come through! I have spent a long time adding small lines to King's face and I think they look really good!

  • For the fifth point I wanted to mention that inspiration is the best thing you can add to a model horse. Even if it doesn't change the physical aspect of your horse it makes a big difference for the artist working on it. It means more passion and effort that goes into your work naturally because of inspiration!

Thank you so much for reading! In this post I mentioned inspiration as a key feature for every model horse and though I believe this is very true it is also not something you can force. I know there are lots of artists out there struggling with artistic blocks and I too have been there with some of my customs so I'm pointing out that even if you are not especially motivated or inspired to work on a custom it's not a detrimental factor. At the end of the day inspiration is something artists fell. It can't be summoned, controlled, or removed. Inspiration is just there sometimes to give us a boost. It will not affect the skills of an artist.

Until next time I wish everyone a good time customizing!
