5 Ways to Improve your Photography Skills Remotely!

Whenever someone asks me how to improve their photography, I will first ask if they know how to use their camera, or if they’ve taken a photography course, and whilst that is important, not everyone wants/can take a photography course. Sometimes even practicing and going out for shoots can be difficult. So what are 5 ways to improve your photography skills remotely, without taking any pictures?

  1. Study. Studying other photographers’ work helps you build an eye for identifying different styles of photography and compositional aspects. Follow your favorite photographers on social media, look at their pictures intently and try to identify why they have made certain choices when it comes to lighting, composition, and editing. By building your knowledge of other people’s work, you are able to decide what styles you like and don’t like, and you will eventually develop a preferred photography style that you want to aim for.

  2. Read. In albums, magazines, and books written by/ about photographers, authors will often give insightful information about each picture or their photography process. This can help you learn niece techniques that you might be able to apply in your photo shoots!

  3. YouTube. Watching YouTube videos is a great way to improve your photography skills with minimal effort! There is an abundance of talented creators out there sharing their photography experience. It is a free and accessible way to learn camera settings, composition, and the history of photography, especially for beginners!

  4. If possible, talk to other photographers and get feedback on your old photos. When someone experienced is actually looking at your work, they might be able to through some helpful hints your way!

  5. Take notes and create your own photography notebook! Taking notes and writing down the tips you hear, makes sure you are able to quickly reference them back when you forget something, and putting together a photography notebook with your printed-out pictures, tips, references, and other info can be a fun activity! Even if you are more advanced, there is no shame in going back through notes and referencing them! I have a PDF file with notes that I used to reference every time I forgot something, until I memorized everything I needed!

I hope this post gave you a bit of motivation to improve your photography skills even if you are not actively taking pictures! If you want to find out more about what I do, I’ll leave some links below!
