Esreah - My Plan didn’t go to Plan, so I Made This Model Horse Custom

It didn’t work. That’s just that simple. This model horse custom is kind of a reflection of that. Esreah, as I have decided to name her, is my first completed Breyer Stablemate custom. She is a part-Arabian with a beautiful tobiano coat, yet her striking blue eyes have that undeniable expression as if to say, “I know everything, and nothing at the same time.” Because truly, horses seem to know things we didn’t think they could understand, but they are anchored in the present, and they respond to what is placed in front of them. Esreah’s story is filled by a series of unfortunate events, but if none of that would have happened, I would not be sitting here with a model horse in my hand. It’s strange to say that the outcome of my past week all resulted in a model horse, but since that is what has come to be, I want to share how Esreah was created…

This past weekend I was meant to attend Karpatia Horse Show, which is one of the biggest horse shows near me. I go every year to photograph the venue, and it’s one of my favorite things! Just a day before the show I got a cold, and although I hoped I would still go, I was not able to make it. That same week, we got invited to a party which we refused because I was going to Karpatia. So there I was, left with about 0.0002% energy, nothing to do because all my plans had been canceled, a mild headache, and a mid-way prepped Stablemate. I decided to finish her, and I still don’t know if the trade was worth it. I would much rather have gone to Karpatia, but then I would not have ended up with Esreah. What I’m trying to hint is that no matter how many things go wrong, sometimes they happen for a reason. There will always be something at the end of that tunnel; it doesn’t go on forever. Maybe someone reading this needed to hear that. I don’t know why the outcome of my situation made me end up with Esreah, and maybe I’ll never know, but art is best made with meaning, and I think she has found her meaning.

Her pictures were taken on this beautiful piece of blue fabric, and as an experiment I actually shot her pictures in pitch darkness only turning on a small lamp. I was not expecting the fabric to leave me with such an interesting reflection, but I’m super happy with how the pictures turned out!

To wrap things up, I really enjoyed working on this custom, especially doing her white tobiano markings! I am so ready to finish the rest of her stablemate herd and move them on to new homes. Although Esreah is a personal piece, some of her friends will be for sale.
