Explaining Model Horse Scales! What are they and how do they work? Diagram included!

July 20, 2025

Hi there! Today I wanted to tackle model horse scales as they can become a pain when shopping or referring to certain models if the scales are not used correctly. So let's get everyone on the same page!

The average height of a real horse, measured at the withers, the tallest point in a horses spine which is located at the base of the neck, is considered to be 15hh equivalent to 150 centimeters or 60 inches. In model horse scales, taking for example 1:24 scale, the larger number, in this case 24, is the amount of model horses of that scale you would need to stack in order to reach the height of a 15hh real horse. Kind of cool, right? Now I will list most of the model horse scales you will encounter, their equivalent, and what brands are associated with those scales.

  • 1:9 scale, 16.6 cm tall/ ~7" (model horse measured at the withers) This scale is associated with the Breyer Traditional scale model horses.

  • 1:12 scale, 12.5 cm tall/ ~5" (model horse measured at the withers) This scale is associated with the Breyer Classic scale model horses and the CollectA Deluxe.

  • 1:20 scale, 7.5 cm tall/ ~3" (model horse measured at the withers) This scale is associated with the normal CollectA scale model horses and is also referred to as Venti scale.

  • 1:24 scale, 6.35 cm tall/ ~2.5" (model horse measured at the withers) This scale is associated with Schleich model horses.

  • 1:28 scale, 5.35 cm tall/ ~2.25" (model horse measured at the withers) This scale is associated with the Breyer Stablemate scale model horses.

  • 1:64 scale, 2.35 cm tall/ ~1" (model horse measured at the withers) This scale is associated with Micro Mini model horses, typically cast in resin.

These were the most common model horse scales that are generally used, however some brands or sellers may offer altered variations or refer to some scales in a different manner, so I always recommend reading the description thoroughly and asking the seller when unsure.

I hope this post was helpful and offered a better understanding of model horse scales!
