Mastering Handheld Model Horse Photography!

Sometimes we stumble upon the perfect photoshoot location or backdrop, yet after inspecting the area we find there is no place to set down our model. That is the perfect scenario for resorting to handheld model horse photography, and in this post I will go over how to spot these scenarios, what elements would make up a good background composition, how to adjust the angle, and how to pivot your model!

Resorting to Handheld

We tend to think of handheld model horse photography as something that happens when we are not able to set down our model to take the picture, but in reality there are so many more uses for handheld, such as when you are aiming to take a shot from a specific angle, the background focal point is too far away and unreachable by foot, or simply when you’re aiming for the geometrical elements of leaves or buildings to add a contemporary theme.

Background Composition and Angle

When doing handheld it’s easiest to do a detail shot, highlighting a specific aspect of our models. Accordingly, the background needs to be non-distracting from our highlighted aspect, however when the subject is close up to the camera it is important to have either a heavy interest background such as textured leaves, a flower, etc. where the model itself acts as our resting point, or a layered background that offers perspective and multiple elements guide our eye throughout the composition. This could be literal depth, (Hills, lakes, planes and geographical features, or trees, rocks, and shrubs acting as scattered objects.) or perceived depth in the case of color and tonality shifts, layers of lighting, and geometrical aspects.

Holding the Model

I like to have at least two fingers holding the tail or a back leg and one other finger to pivot one of the front legs when aiming to photograph the head or front half of my model. The way you hold your model is up to preference, but I recommend you have at least 3-4 fingers holding the model so you don’t risk having it slip or fall.
