Model Horse Showing! Common Abbreviations, Class Definitions, and Set Up!
Model horse showing is in many ways similar to real horse showing, however the hobby has adapted class definitions, abbreviations, and set up to accommodate various models and sculptures!
Common Abbreviations:
There are two different ways to show your models, either in live shows or photo shows. Live shows are held in person, and entrants typically display their models on tables so the judges can walk around and inspect them. Models that are fit to participate in a live show are called LSQ - meaning live show quality (a model with no major flaws in coloring and manufacturing). Photo shows require you to send a picture of your model so it can be judged remotely. PSQ - stands for photo show quality. Photo showing allows you to only show the “good” side of your model, so entrants will often pick the side with less flaws.
CM - stands for customized model
AR - stands for artist resin model
OF - stands for original finish model (something that has not been altered or customized)
Class Definitions!
You can show your horses in halter, workmanship, performance, or fun classes.
Halter Class - where the judges are looking at the model’s resemblance to a specific breed and correct conformation. Entrants provide documentation (informative cards they created showcasing the horse breed their model represents). They may also bring certificates of authenticity, or other paperwork of the model.
Workmanship Class - where the judges look at the finish work and execution of the model, not likeness to any breed. Customs show in this class.
Performance Class - where models show with tack, props, and even riders in any equestrian discipline (check show specifications). Judges look at the overall set up and judge accordingly.
Fun Classes - specifications for these classes vary widely from show to show. They can be costume classes, decorator classes, or any other fun idea/ concept, example: rearing models only.
Divisions:
Class divisions make sure everyone is at an even level. Minis show together, traditional models show together, and so on. Every class, example halter, has divisions for different scales of models. Divisions can also be by breed, or breed and scale, so it’s better to check the show or ask the host for extra information if you are not sure where to enter your model.
Whenever booking a show, make sure you check and read the description and specifications of each class. Be careful to choose the correct division, so your model is not disqualified.

Custom Schleich model horse to Seal Brown OOAK model horse custom
READ CAREFULLY!
This Schleich model horse has been completely hand-customized by myself to be a Dappled Seal Brown coat color with coronet and pastern markings and horse shoes on the legs. She is a completely original and one of a kind (OOAK) model horse. After going through the prepping stage, it was customized using acrylic paint and pastels, and was then sealed with matte varnish spray. The eyes, hooves, corners of mouth, and nostrils of the horse have been glossed. My signature is painted on the belly of the horse (refer to picture). The horse is in 1:24 scale, the standard scale of Schleich horses. This model horse was painted with extreme care and detail however minor flaws may occur and show quality is not guaranteed.
